On the outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark, ogene fills up the air. It is Enugu Ogene na Denmark, a spirited cultural group breathing life into Igbo traditions far from home.
They gather not just to perform, but to connect – to reaffirm who they are—proud Igbo sons and daughters in diaspora.

A cultural bridge across continents

Officially founded in 2023 as a voluntary association, Enugu Ogene na Denmark has quickly become a fixture in Denmark’s cultural scene. Their mission goes beyond the music. Through dazzling masquerade performances, live drum ensembles, and community gatherings, the group keeps traditions alive and relevant.
“Even our children who were born here in Europe now understand that Igbo culture is not just an idea—it is something you dance, wear, and feel,” says one of the group’s founding members.
Rooted in Enugu, growing in Denmark
True to their name, the group takes inspiration from Enugu State, Nigeria—a place known for its rich masquerade traditions. But in Denmark, their stage is the world.
Their performances feature among others ekwe (wooden slit drum), udu (clay pot drum), and ogene bell. Whether at Nigerian Independence Day celebrations or local multicultural festivals, they draw crowds eager to witness the rhythm and energy of a living tradition.
